Randal Grichuk Reportedly Traded to Royals from Diamondbacks Ahead of MLB Deadline

Zach BacharJul 26, 2025

The Kansas City Royals acquired outfielder Randal Grichuk in a trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan.

Grichuk appeared to receive the news in the fifth inning of Arizona's matchup with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The change of scenery doesn't come as a major surprise, with Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reporting that Grichuk was "expected" to be dealt earlier on Saturday.

Arizona received relief pitcher Andrew Hoffman in the swap with Kansas City, per Jon Heyman of the New York Post.

Grichuk is hitting .240 with seven home runs, 15 doubles and 22 RBIs this year while owning a .734 OPS. The veteran wrapped up an impressive inaugural season with the Diamondbacks in 2024, posting a .291/.348/.528 slash line across 106 games.

The Royals will be hoping that he can provide a boost to their lineup, as they've failed to build upon a promising 2024 campaign in which they made an American League Division Series appearance.

Kansas City currently holds a 51-53 record, sitting 3.5 games back from the final AL wild card spot.

The Royals have struggled offensively throughout their year, as their .680 OPS as a team ranks No. 25 in the majors. They've also scored a mere 370 runs in 2025, the fewest among all AL teams.

Arizona reportedly planned to sell some veteran contributors ahead of Thursday's trade deadline and has already been active, sending first baseman Josh Naylor to the Seattle Mariners.

The Diamondbacks acquired Hoffman, who has suited up in three games with the Royals this year while spending most of his time with the Triple-A Omaha Storm Chasers.

The 25-year-old has recorded five strikeouts while allowing two earned runs across 4.2 innings pitched with Kansas City during his 2025 campaign.
