Yankees Reportedly Trade for Ryan McMahon, Rockies Get 2 Prospects Before MLB Deadline

Julia StumbaughJul 25, 2025

The New York Yankees have addressed the club's gap at third base ahead of the 2025 MLB trade deadline.

The Yankees are acquiring third baseman Ryan McMahon from the Colorado Rockies in exchange for two minor-league pitchers Griffin Herring and Josh Grosz, MLB.com's Mark Feinsand reported Friday.

McMahon, 30, has played all nine of his MLB seasons with the Rockies. He is batting .217 with 16 home runs and 35 RBI through 100 appearances with the club this season.

The Yankees were previously connected to an interest in Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suarez, but pursuing McMahon instead allows the club to add a long-term infield option rather than a player on an expiring deal.

Suarez is set to hit free agency this winter, while McMahon is under team control through the 2027 season, per Spotrac.

The Yankees tried to address the need at third base earlier this summer by slotting in All-Star second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. at the position.

Chisholm struggled on defense before he was moved back to second base on July 8 after over a month at the position.

The Yankees then moved on from former third baseman DJ LeMahieu as an infield option by designating him for assignment on July 10, leaving the club to alternate Jorbit Vivas and Oswald Peraza at third base.

In 12 games since moving Chisholm the Yankees have ranked 26th in MLB with a combined batting average of .203 at the position, per FanGraphs.

McMahon is tied for second among all MLB third basemen with four outs above average as a fielder so far this season, per MLB's Baseball Savant.

The Yankees will hope that McMahon's arrival will help shore up the club's infield defense issues, while a change of scenery from one of MLB's lowest-ranked teams could help motivate him to provide a boost on offense.

New York could now turn to address the club's pitching needs ahead of the July 31 deadline as a response to the season-ending injuries suffered by Gerrit Cole and Clarke Schmidt.

The Rockies will meanwhile add two prospects formerly ranked as the Yankees' No. 8 and No. 21 prospects by MLB Pipeline.
