Red Sox Reportedly 'Quickly Rejected' Padres' Jarren Duran Trade Offer Involving Cease

Adam WellsJul 25, 2025

Despite their need for starting pitching depth heading into the stretch run, the Boston Red Sox recently rejected an offer from the San Diego Padres for a deal involving Jarren Duran and Dylan Cease.

Per Sean McAdam of MassLive.com, the Red Sox "quickly rejected" the Padres' proposal of Cease, minor league catcher Ethan Salas and one other prospect for Duran.

The Padres have been heavily linked to Duran leading up to the July 31 trade deadline.

ESPN's Jeff Passan noted on July 10 that "no player and team have been linked as strongly" as Duran and the Padres as we move closer to the trade deadline.

Boston has a logjam in the outfield right now with Duran, Roman Anthony, Ceddanne Rafaela and Wilyer Abreu vying for three spots. Anthony has primarily been used at DH since Rafael Devers was traded to the San Francisco Giants.

McAdam did note Duran is "likely" to be dealt at some point, but the expectation is it would probably happen in the offseason.

Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow has said throughout the summer that starting pitching is an area he would like to target.

Cease was a bit of a surprise addition to the list of available pitchers this week, just because the Padres are currently in position to be a wild card team in the NL. His impending free agency after this season does allow general manager A.J. Preller to get creative.

The package Preller presented to Boston for Duran is a compelling one. Cease, while he does have a 4.59 ERA, his peripherals remain strong with 144 strikeouts and a career-high 3.43 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 113.2 innings.

Salas is San Diego's No. 2 prospect and the 21st-ranked prospect overall, per MLB.com. The 19-year-old is only hitting .188/.325/.219 at Double-A this season, but he has only played in 10 games due to a back injury. He also entered 2025 as the youngest player at the Double-A level.

An All-Star in 2024, Duran hasn't played quite up to that level so far this season. He's still having a strong year with a .254/.321/.428 slash line in 102 games. The 28-year-old has three seasons of team control remaining after 2025.
