Mariners, D-Backs' Updated Starting Lineup, Payroll After Rumored Josh Naylor Trade

Scott PolacekJul 24, 2025

The MLB trade deadline isn't until July 31 at 6 p.m. ET, but the Arizona Diamondbacks and Seattle Mariners reportedly didn't waste much time making the first major swap of the season.

ESPN's Jeff Passan reported Thursday the Diamondbacks sent first baseman Josh Naylor to the Mariners in exchange for pitchers Brandyn Garcia and Ashton Izzi.

According to MLB.com's prospect rankings, Garcia was the 13th-best player in the Mariners' minor league system while Izzi was the 16th-best. Perhaps they will one day be contributors for Arizona at the major league level, but Naylor was the headliner in this deal.

He joins a Seattle squad that Spotrac lists as having an adjusted payroll of $156.3 million. Arizona checks in with an adjusted payroll of $186.3 million.

FanGraphs' projected new starting lineup against right-handed pitching for the Mariners has Naylor right in the middle as the No. 5 hitter:

1. J.P. Crawford, SS

2. Julio Rodríguez, CF

3. Cal Raleigh, C

4. Randy Arozarena, LF

5. Josh Naylor, 1B

6. Jorge Polanco, DH

7. Luke Raley, RF

8. Ben Williamson, 3B

9. Cole Young, 2B

As for Arizona, here is what its new projected starting lineup against right-handed pitching looks like:

1. Corbin Carroll, RF

2. Ketel Marte, 2B

3. Geraldo Perdomo, SS

4. Eugenio Suárez, 3B

5. Lourdes Gurriel Jr., LF

6. Adrian Del Castillo, DH

7. Alek Thomas, CF

8. Blaze Alexander, 1B

9. José Herrera, C

The Diamondbacks could be far from done wheeling and dealing, as they have been a central focus of rumors leading up to the deadline. Players such as Eugenio Suárez, Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly could all be on the move by the 31st.

Arizona is 50-53 and in fourth place in the National League West. It is 10 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers for the division lead and 5.5 games behind the San Diego Padres for the last wild-card spot.

If the front office decides a late-season push is unlikely, especially after reportedly trading Naylor, it could look to accelerate a rebuild and make some more headline deals.

As for the Mariners, they currently occupy an American League wild-card spot and are six games behind the Houston Astros in the AL West. They already have one of the league's best power hitters in Cal Raleigh, and Naylor provides more offensive firepower to the lineup.

He was an All-Star last season for the Cleveland Guardians with 31 home runs and 108 RBI and is slashing .292/.360/.447 with 11 long balls, 59 RBI and 11 stolen bases this season.

Naylor helped lead Cleveland to the playoffs last season and will look to do the same with Seattle this season.
