Terry McLaurin Trade Reportedly Won't Be Considered by Commanders Amid Contract Rumors

Adam WellsJul 19, 2025

Despite Terry McLaurin publicly expressing his unhappiness with the state of his contract talks, the Washington Commanders aren't looking to trade the veteran wide receiver.

Appearing on the Saturday morning SportsCenter, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported the Commanders aren't entertaining offers for McLaurin:

"Terry McLaurin, so he's frustrated. You heard him this week talking about how there's no deal, he would like progress being made, there hasn't been. I'm told that's only scratching the surface of the issue here, because the wide receiver market has jumped into that $30 million range. My sense is, McLaurin feels Washington hasn't really been willing to acknowledge that. So if they're not, it's almost like he's taken a pay decrease because he's a year from free agency. So, something's gonna have to give here, cooler head should prevail. They want McLaurin there. They're not trading McLaurin. That was made clear to me from a source of the team."

It's been known throughout the offseason that McLaurin wanted a new deal, but the extent of his disappointment with the Commanders wasn't clear until this week.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, McLaurin said he has been "pretty frustrated" with how things have gone and the two sides haven't had any talks in more than a month.

Despite his unhappiness with how the Commanders have handled things, McLaurin did emphasize he wants to remain with the club and hasn't requested a trade.

McLaurin is entering the final season of his three-year, $68.4 million contract extension that was signed in July 2022. His $22.8 million average annual salary ranks 17th among all receivers entering this season.

Nine wide receivers have signed deals worth at least $30 million annually since McLaurin got his extension.

One potential concern for the Commanders is McLaurin's age. He will turn 30 on Sept. 15, four days after their Week 2 game against the Green Bay Packers.

Among the top-20 receiver contracts by total value, Tyreek Hill and Calvin Ridley are the only who are currently over the age of 30.

McLaurin has been remarkably consistent throughout his career, especially considering how much instability the Commanders had at quarterback prior to Jayden Daniels' arrival last season.

A two-time Pro Bowl selection, McLaurin has put up at least 919 receiving yards in each of his first six seasons. He has surpassed the 1,000-yard mark every year since 2020 and set a career-high with 13 touchdowns last season.

It would seem likely that talks between McLaurin's representatives and the Commanders will start to pick up next week when the club reports to training camp on Tuesday.

McLaurin, who has already skipped OTAs and mandatory minicamp, could continue his holdout when camp begins until his contract situation is resolved.
