Josh Giddey, Bulls Reportedly 'Remain Far Apart' in Contract Talks Amid Kuminga Rumors

Scott PolacekJul 17, 2025

Josh Giddey largely played well during his first season with the Chicago Bulls, but the restricted free agent and Eastern Conference team reportedly "remain far apart" in discussions about his future.

NBA insider Jake Fischer reported Giddey is looking for a contract that will pay him approximately $30 million a year, and Chicago is yet to grant him his desired deal. Fischer also noted Jonathan Kuminga's camp was "hopeful" the Bulls would acquire him via a sign-and-trade, although the Giddey "dance" is occupying Chicago.

The Kuminga situation has dragged on this offseason with Fischer reporting he is looking for a deal that pays him at least $25 million per season. However, given the relative lack of cap space around the league, any team willing to pay him that much would have to acquire him via a sign-and-trade.

Such a move might be intriguing to the Bulls on the surface, as he is just 22 years old and has flashed his potential at times. He could be a building block in the team's ongoing rebuild.

But Giddey is also just 22 years old and was already on the roster last season. Signing him to the contract he wants and acquiring Kuminga would be quite expensive and perhaps not the direction the front office is looking to take this offseason.

Still, it was hard to argue with Giddey's on-court production after the Bulls acquired him from the Oklahoma City Thunder by trading away Alex Caruso.

The guard averaged 14.6 points, 8.1 rebounds, 7.2 assists and 1.2 steals per game while shooting 46.5 percent from the field and 37.8 percent from deep. He was durable as well and appeared in 70 games, marking the third straight season he reached that mark.

Giddey played his best basketball down the stretch of the season and notched five triple-doubles in March and April alone. In fact, he averaged a triple-double of 20.8 points, 13.0 rebounds and 10.8 assists a night in April and then posted a double-double of 25 points and 10 boards in the play-in loss to the Miami Heat.

It seemed like he further grasped head coach Billy Donovan's system the more experienced he gained, which was a positive sign of things to come for the Bulls and the point guard.

But the only way he can build on that as a focal point in the offense is if the two sides bridge the gap in their negotiations and he returns in 2025-26.
