Kyle Schwarber Jokes '1 Good BP' Won Him MLB ASG MVP After Swing-Off Tiebreaker
After his immaculate performance in the All-Star Game swing-off tiebreaker earned him ASG MVP honors, Philadelphia Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber was aware of the unique feat he had just achieved.
ESPN's Jeff Passan reported that Schwarber, who hadn't registered a hit in the All-Star Game before hitting a home run on all three of his swings in the Home Run Derby-style tiebreaker, said afterward, "One good BP wins you a trophy these days."
The tiebreaker was prompted after the American League stormed back from a 6-0 deficit over the final three innings to knot things up after the ninth. Rather than playing extra innings, this marked the first year that a swing-off was instituted to decide the winner of the game, with both leagues selecting three players to participate.
The National League was trailing 3-1 when Schwarber stepped up to the plate. He launched all three of his swings to give the NL a 4-3 edge. The AL had one last hope with Tampa Bay Rays first baseman Jonathan Aranda, but his swings came up short of going over the wall.
Schwarber donated the bat he used to go 3-for-3 to the National Baseball Hall of Fame, and he noticed that the bat didn't show any signs of being used.
"No ball marks when you flush it," Schwarber said.
While it's unlikely that the swing-off tiebreaker would be utilized to decide regular-season games, the overwhelming sentiment was that it was a perfect way to close out the All-Star Game.
"There's probably a world where you could see that in the future, where maybe it's in some regular-season mix," AL manager Aaron Boone of the New York Yankees said after the game. "I mean, I wouldn't be surprised if people start talking about it like that. Obviously, I don't think that should happen, necessarily, or would at any time in the near future. But I've got to say, it was pretty exciting."
