Dodgers two-way star Shohei Ohtani leads off the National League order. Teammate Freddie Freeman has the cleanup spot as he returns to Atlanta, where he spent his first 12 seasons:
MLB already confirmed the Tigers' Tarik Skubal and the Pittsburgh Pirates' Paul Skenes will be the starting pitchers. You could assemble a lineup from any period across the sport's history and it would have a difficult time against either arm.
Skubal is 10-3 with a 2.23 ERA in 19 starts, and he has struck out 153 batters and walked just 16 over 121 innings. Skenes is 4-8 but leads MLB in ERA (2.01) while fanning 131 over 121 innings of work.
Pitting Skubal against Ohtani is the kind of matchup the All-Star Game is all about. The same goes for when Judge steps into the box against Skenes. One of the highlights from the 2024 Midsummer Classic was Skenes throwing a scoreless first inning.
Boone and Roberts will inevitably make a lot of changes to the offense as the All-Star Game unfolds. Twenty different players stepped up to the plate for the AL in 2024, while 19 were used by the NL.
Just based on the starters, you'd have to give the early edge to the National League, though.
New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor has 19 home runs and a .457 slugging percentage, and he's batting eighth. Chicago Cubs center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong is faring even better, with 25 homers and a .265/.302/.544 slash line, and he's ninth.
Roberts is used to having plenty of options in his day job with L.A. As the NL manager, even he has to be struck by the depth at his disposal for Tuesday night.
