Terry Francona Becomes 13th MLB Manager with 2,000 Career Wins as Reds Beat Rockies
Cincinnati Reds manager Terry Francona added another milestone to his legendary resume.
With Sunday's 4-2 win against the Colorado Rockies, Francona is now the 13th manager in MLB history to reach the 2,000-win mark.
Sunday's win improved Francona's career regular-season record to 2,000-1,719 across 24 seasons. He and Bruce Bochy of the Texas Rangers are the only active managers with at least 2,000 wins.
Still, despite the milestone, Francona wasn't focused on his individual achievement after the victory.
"I don't know if you believe me, but I wanted to win so bad to get us three games over .500," Francona told reporters, as the Reds are now 50-47 entering the All-Star break. "I was so nervous."
Francona spent the first four years of his managerial career with the Philadelphia Phillies from 1997 to 2000. After joining the Boston Red Sox in 2004, he led the franchise to a World Series title in his first season, and he followed up with another World Series win in 2007. He remained in Boston until 2011 and joined the Cleveland Guardians in 2013. He guided the Guardians to a World Series appearance in 2016 and earned three AL Manager of the Year awards in 2013, 2016 and 2022.
After taking the 2024 season off due to health issues, Francona signed a three-year deal with the Reds to return to doing what he does best. He's hoping to turn around a franchise that has just one playoff appearance in the last 11 years.
Cincinnati is fourth in the NL Central at the All-Star break, so Francona will have some work to do as he tries to bring the team back to the postseason.
