DJ LeMahieu Reportedly Drawing Interest from 'Multiple Teams' After Yankees Release

Julia StumbaughJul 12, 2025

"Multiple teams" are showing interest in infielder DJ LeMahieu following his release by the New York Yankees, MLB Network's Jon Morosi reported on Saturday.

LeMahieu was benched and then cut by the Yankees last week after the club decided to replace him with Jazz Chisholm Jr. at second base.

Morosi described LeMahieu as a potential fit at either first base, second base or designated hitter with his next team.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said after benching LeMahieu on Wednesday that he had no plans of using the infielder at third base because "physically it’s a challenge for him right now," The Athletic's Chris Kirschner reported.

Kirschner noted that the Yankees viewed LeMahieu as an option at third base heading into the season, but their assessment changed after the calf injury that sidelined the infielder for the start of the campaign.

LeMahieu, who turns 37 on Sunday, was slashing .266/.338/.336 with 12 RBI through 45 games with the Yankees prior to his release.

After a slow start to the season following his reinstatement from the IL, LeMahieu started to warm up in mid-June. He posted a .310 batting average in 15 games over the three weeks leading up to his release, per Baseball Reference.

But LeMahieu's defensive struggles at second base were highlighted during the Yankees' recent Subway Series against the New York Mets, which may have influenced Boone's decision to bench him in favor of Chisholm at the position.

LeMahieu had $6.45 million remaining on his 2025 salary and $15 million due in 2026 at the time of his release, according to Spotrac.

Although no longer playing up to the standards of the batting titles he won in 2016 and 2020, LeMahieu could be an option for a team looking to add a veteran infielder or designated hitter as the July 31 trade deadline approaches.

Morosi previously floated the Seattle Mariners, which are currently platooning Luke Raley and Donovan Solano at first base, as a possible fit for LeMahieu. Given the potential that LeMahieu could be playing for a league minimum salary, he might be an affordable option as the Mariners look to improve their infield down the stretch.
