Mike Brown Says He'll 'Embrace' Expectations as Knicks HC After Tom Thibodeau Firing
While the New York Knicks haven't found significant success consistently in several decades, new head coach Mike Brown understands the expectations that come with leading the historic franchise.
He's ready to embrace those lofty expectations.
"Nobody has any bigger expectations than I do," Brown told reporters at his introductory press conference on Tuesday. "My expectations are high. This is the Knicks and Madison Square Garden. It's iconic... I love and embrace the expectations that come along with it."
Though they haven't won a title since 1973, the championship window is open for the Knicks. With the star duo of Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns leading the way, New York reached its first conference finals since 2000 last season and fell just two wins shy of moving on to the NBA Finals.
Now, after firing head coach Tom Thibodeau, the Knicks are hoping Brown can be the coach who helps them get to the next level.
He brings championship experience to the team, having won a title as an assistant with the San Antonio Spurs in 2003 and three more as an assistant with the Golden State Warriors in 2017, 2018 and 2022.
Knicks president Leon Rose is counting on Brown's "championship pedigree."
"Mike has coached on the biggest stages in our sport and brings championship pedigree to our organization," Rose said in a statement. "His experience leading the bench during the NBA Finals, winning four titles as an assistant coach, and his ability to grow and develop players will all help us as we aim to bring a championship to New York for our fans."
