Kerry Wood, Josh Beckett and Hunter Greene are three names that are often mentioned as the best high school right-handers in MLB draft history.
Seth Hernandez possesses that same level of talent and upside.
"Without a doubt he belongs in the conversation,” a long-time talent evaluator told Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com. “This kid has components of all of those other pitchers. He doesn’t have quite the same power to his curveball that Wood had. He doesn’t have quite the same aggressive demeanor Beckett had, but there’s a little bit of all of them in him."
He checks all the boxes teams look for when scouting prep pitching talent.
His 6'4", 190-pound frame offers a ton of remaining physical projection, while his present stuff is already electric, including an upper 90s fastball, advanced changeup, high-spin curveball and a hard slider.
He consistently throws all of those pitches for strikes, evidenced by his seven walks allowed in 53.1 innings this spring, and he also gets high marks for having the intangibles and makeup to continue getting better, even with his elite present ability.
Even with his remaining upside, his present game is advanced enough that it's not out of the question to think he could be in the majors before his 21st birthday.
The right-handed prep pitcher demographic is always a risky one, but Hernandez is a special prospect, with talent that simply does not come around every draft cycle.
Highlights
Pro Comparison: Josh Beckett
Beckett was listed at 6'4", 190 pounds when he was first drafted by the Marlins with the No. 2 overall pick in 1999, and he already had an upper-90s fastball and an elite curveball even as a teenager.
Sounds familiar? By the time he reached his prime, Beckett had added roughly 25 pounds of muscle to his frame and refined his secondary stuff on his way to a fantastic 14-year career where he was a three-time All-Star and postseason hero.
