Ben Simmons Reportedly Eyed by Knicks After Rumored Russell Westbrook Interest
The New York Knicks were linked to veteran guard Russell Westbrook earlier this week, but it sounds like they've turned their attention to another free agent.
According to Ian Begley of SNY, the Knicks have "checked in on" veteran guard Ben Simmons, who split the 2024-25 season between the Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Clippers.
Begley had previously reported that there was "mutual interest" between Westbrook and the Knicks leading up to the start of free agency. However, Stefan Bondy of the New York Post later reported that New York was unlikely to pursue Westbrook following the signing of veteran sixth man Jordan Clarkson.

Simmons' struggles over the past few years have put a major dent in a once-promising career. In 33 games with the Nets last season, he averaged 6.2 points, 5.2 rebounds and 6.9 assists per game. He signed a one-year deal with the Clippers in February after having his contract bought out, but he only appeared in 17 games for Los Angeles and averaged 2.9 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.1 assists.
At the height of his career, Simmons was one of the best two-way players in the NBA. He earned three straight All-Star selections from 2019 to 2021, and he was named to the All-Defensive first team twice. Injuries and off-the-court circumstances derailed his career, and it appears unlikely that he will be able to recapture the magic he once had.
Still, the Knicks are hoping to add depth this offseason to their top-heavy roster led by star players Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns. Begley noted that "people briefed on the matter say a decision on that roster spot isn’t expected until after the head coach is hired." ESPN's Shams Charania reported Wednesday that New York is finalizing a deal to hire Mike Brown as head coach, so the team could try to fill that roster spot soon.
Begley added that Simmons "has met with three other teams and is expected to make a decision soon," so the Knicks may have to move quickly if they want to bring him into the fold for next season.
