Jason Kidd Reportedly Expected to Get Mavs Contract Extension Amid Knicks HC Rumors
Don't fret, Dallas Mavericks fans—despite the flurry of reports about Jason Kidd this offseason, an extension is expected at some point before the 2025-26 campaign kicks off.
According to NBA reporters Marc Stein and Jake Fischer, "the Mavericks are expected to extend Kidd's contract again before the start of next season. Soon after Dallas won the NBA Draft Lottery on May 12 and the right to select Duke star Cooper Flagg with the No. 1 overall pick, Kidd was deputized to operate as the team's lead spokesman on All Things Flagg."
Just two days ago, Steve Popper of Newsday reported that Kidd "has not gotten clarity from the Mavericks other than the public statements from [president of basketball operations and general manager Nico Harrison]."
That same day, however, Stefan Bondy of the New York Post noted that extension talks were simply being put on hold:
The entire situation likely wouldn't be on anybody's radar—at least not to this degree—had the New York Knicks not reportedly sought to interview Kidd and a number of other head coaches currently under contract with different teams (entreaties that were universally denied, with ESPN's Shams Charania saying two weeks ago that the Knicks' requests were rejected four times in the span of 24 hours).
As for Kidd, the 52-year-old has gone 179-49 in four seasons at the helm for the Mavericks, leading them to a pair of berths in the Western Conference Finals and a trip to the NBA Finals in the 2023-24 season.
The Mavs, meanwhile, have undergone immense changes since February, when the team made the stunning decision to trade Luka Dončić. Since then, they missed the playoffs (with injuries to Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving contributing to that disappointment), shockingly won the draft lottery and added Flagg to the mix.
One of the few constants during those peaks and valleys has been Kidd, who has not been subject to the ire directed toward president of basketball operations and general manager Nico Harrison or team governor Patrick Dumont. An extension seems highly likely.
