Red Wings Legend Alex Delvecchio Dies at 93, Hall of Famer Won 3 Stanley Cups

Scott PolacekJul 1, 2025

Hockey Hall of Famer and Detroit Red Wings legend Alex Delvecchio died Tuesday at the age of 93.

The Red Wings shared a statement from Delvecchio's family that said, in part, "It is with great sadness that we share the passing of our beloved Alex Delvecchio, who left us peacefully on July 1, 2025, surrounded by his family at the age of 93 years old.

"... While the world knew him as an incredible hockey player with numerous accomplishments on the ice, we knew him as someone whose humility, strength, competitiveness, kindness, and heart were even greater than his professional achievements."

It is impossible to tell the story of the Red Wings without Delvecchio.

The center played all 24 of his NHL seasons with the iconic franchise and was most famously in the middle of a dominant line alongside Gordie Howe and Ted Lindsay. Delvecchio helped guide Detroit to three Stanley Cup titles during the 1952, 1954 and 1955 campaigns.

He remains third in the franchise's history in games (1,550), goals (456) and points (1,281). He is also fourth in assists (875) and took home the Lady Byng Trophy, which is given to the player who shows the best sportsmanship in the league, three different times.

What's more, Delvecchio was a 13-time All-Star.

"If not for Gordie Howe, his legendary linemate known as Mr. Hockey, Delvecchio could have been Mr. Red Wing," Gene Myers of the Detroit Free Press wrote while also noting Howe is the only one who played longer in Detroit than Delvecchio's 24 seasons and Steve Yzerman is the only one who was a captain for more than his 12 seasons.

Delvecchio was more successful as a player than coach, as he coached the Red Wings for four seasons after his retirement from 1973-74 through 1976-77. He was also the general manager during part of that stretch, but Detroit missed the playoffs all four seasons.

Still, he remained an icon for the franchise that retired his No. 10 jersey in 1991. It also unveiled a statue of Delvecchio inside Joe Louis Arena in 2008.

He was also inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1977 and named one of the 100 Greatest NHL Players in league history in 2017.

Delvecchio was a hockey and Red Wings legend in life, but he was also a husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, as the family's statement mentioned while also thanking the fans who "meant everything to Alex" as they supported him for decades.
