Warriors Reportedly Optimistic About Jonathan Kuminga Contract, Market 'Not Great'

Scott PolacekJun 30, 2025

Jonathan Kuminga's immediate future is up in the air at the start of free agency this offseason, and that might mean a return to the Golden State Warriors.

"There seems to be optimism in the Warriors' camp that he will re-sign," ESPN's Marc J. Spears reported Monday on NBA Today. "He will be a restricted free agent. This market's not great for him. As one NBA GM told me, 'what has he proven to be worth what his agent wants, which is $25-plus million? Who has that money for him, why does he deserve that?'"

While Kuminga might stand out for his potential alone in a relatively weak free agency class this offseason, the lack of teams with enough cap space to give him such a contract certainly stands out.

ESPN's Bobby Marks reported Saturday, before any moves were made, that the Brooklyn Nets were the only team projected to have more than $20 million in cap space available this offseason.

That could limit Kuminga's options this offseason, although ESPN's Ramona Shelburne pointed out he could change teams through a sign-and-trade.

"I think the Warriors want him back, the question is does he want to be back," she said. "I know there are teams that like Jonathan Kuminga, they just don't have cap space. So it has to be a sign-and-trade. And from what I understand, the Warriors are not going to give him up for assets they don't like in return. They want to keep him unless they get something great back for him."

At this point in his career, Kuminga hasn't fully lived up to the expectations that came with him being the No. 7 overall pick of the 2021 NBA draft.

He was limited to just 47 games this past season and put up solid-but-unspectacular numbers at 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists a night while shooting 45.4 percent from the field and 30.5 percent from deep.

Kuminga also fell out of the rotation at times late in the season after the Warriors acquired Jimmy Butler and appeared in just three of the team's seven games against the Houston Rockets in the first round of the playoffs.

While he saw a significant increase in playing time in the second round against the Minnesota Timberwolves, that was largely because Stephen Curry was sidelined by a hamstring injury.

With Golden State's veteran lineup featuring Curry, Butler and Draymond Green, it is fair to question what kind of role the 22-year-old will have if he does return in 2025-26. However, he may not have many other realistic options given the overall offseason outlook around the league.
