Wimbledon 2025 Results, Winners, Losers and Highlights from Monday's Bracket

Nicholas NathansonJun 30, 2025

Day one of Wimbledon is now in the books.

And boy, was it exciting.

Carlos Alcaraz overcame an inspired Fabio Fognini and the blistering heat in a five-set thriller.

But other players weren't so lucky, including Daniil Medvedev, Holger Rune, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Matteo Berrettini, who all stunningly fell.

Taylor Fritz looked in danger of joining the list but fought back from a two-set deficit to set up a decisive final set against Giovanni Mpetshi-Perricard.

That match, along with Alexander Zverev's, will finish on Tuesday due to an incoming curfew late Monday.

In the women's draw, top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka cruised to a straight-set victory, while Madison Keys and Jasmine Paolini erased one-set deficits to advance.

Below, we've got you covered with the top results and reactions from Monday's play.

Carlos Alcaraz Survives In Blistering Heat

3 of 6
Day One: The Championships - Wimbledon 2025
Carlos Alcaraz

Plenty had written off Fabio Fognini in his opening round matchup against Carlos Alcaraz at Wimbledon.

After all, the 38-year-old, who is planning to retire following the 2025 season, hadn’t won a tour-level match since October.

But from the get-go, the Italian showed the Centre Court crowd that his matchup against the two-time defending champion was nowhere near his swan song.

Alcaraz entered amidst a career-high 18-match win streak but needed over four and a half hours to survive a five-set thriller.

The Spaniard uncharacteristically struggled throughout the match, especially at the baseline, where over the last year and change, he's developed into one of the most consistent players on tour.

The five-time major champion committed 62 unforced errors and served just 58 percent from his first serve.

Despite playing a five-set match to begin his 2025 Wimbledon campaign, there's little concern for Alcaraz's play going forward, considering this was the warmest opening day at Wimbledon on record, with temperatures as high as 34°C.

The 22-year-old is still very much considered the favorite to defend his title and should face few troubles against World No. 733 and Wimbledon debutant Olive Travet in the second round.

Daniil Medvedev, Holer Rune Fall In Major Upsets

Daniil Medvedev headed to the All England Club with hopes of turning his season around after failing to advance beyond the second round in consecutive majors.

After all, Wimbledon was a place where he achieved success, reaching the semifinal in back-to-back years.

But his quest came to a stunning end on Monday, and for the first time since 2017, he's lost in the opening round in back-to-back majors.

The one-time major champion struggled with consistency all throughout the match, committing 46 unforced errors in just four sets, along with 12 double faults.

Medvedev's stunning loss comes eight days after reaching the Halle Open final.

A few hours after Medvedev lost, another upset rocked the men's draw.

This time, by eighth-ranked Holger Rune, who fell to Nicolas Jarry despite a two-set lead.

Rune raced out to a two-set lead in just 77 minutes, looking like this would be a straight-set victory.

However, Jarry found his heavy serve as the match progressed, hitting 22 aces across the final three sets alone.

Jarry won 45 of 53 points on first serve in the final three sets, while Rune regressed over time, unable to endure long physical rallies anymore.

The match looked to be in Jarry's favor at the end of the fourth set, when Rune needed a medical timeout to address an issue with his right knee.

Aryna Sabalenka Handles Business In Straight-Set Victory

5 of 6
Day One: The Championships - Wimbledon 2025
Aryna Sabalenka

After falling in consecutive major finals, Aryna Sabalenka kickstarted her Wimbledon campaign with a straight-set victory over Carson Banstine.

The 27-year-old won 78 percent of points on her first serve, while she was equally impressive at the net, where she won 85 percent of points.

After failing to hit her first serve at a high mark in the first set, Branstine hit her first serve at 70 percent—23 percent higher than the opening set.

That resulted in a tightly contested set, where she even had an opportunity to take it to a tiebreaker.

However, Sabalenka's aggression and physicality proved to be the difference-maker, as she saved her sole break point and won 7 of 14 points on Branstine's second serve in the second set.

The three-time Grand Slam champion has never reached the final at the All England Club and will face tougher competition as the draw tightens, but she is still expected to make a deep run.

Jasmine Paolini, Madison Keys Advance Despite Early Challenges

6 of 6
Day One: The Championships - Wimbledon 2025
Jasmine Paolini

Within 40 minutes of her opening round match, Jasmine Paolini found herself trailing by a set and a break.

It looked like the 2024 Wimbledon finalist was headed for an early exit after committing 17 unforced errors in a 30-minute opening set.

While the inconsistencies dragged into the second set, Paolini adjusted her return game against Anastasija Sevastova, winning 53 percent of points on her opponent's first serve and 67 percent on the second serve in the second set.

Then, in the third set, Paolini broke the 35-year-old right off the bat and never looked back.

2025 Australian Open champion Madison Keys also looked in danger of bowing out in the opening round.

After falling in a one-sided tiebreaker, Keys broke Elena Gabriela Ruse multiple times, including late in the second set, to even the score.

In the third set, Keys continued to up her game, playing well-rounded tennis from the baseline.

Both Keys and Paolini are considered dark-horse contenders and are capable of making deep runs.
