Rich Paul's Comments on LeBron, Lakers Reportedly Surprised NBA Teams amid Rumors

Multiple NBA teams were reportedly surprised by the implication that LeBron James could potentially request a trade away from the Los Angeles Lakers this offseason.

Speaking Monday on the Brian Windhorst & The Hoop Collective podcast (beginning at the 12:20 mark), ESPN NBA insider Brian Windhorst said he spoke to a handful of teams that could possibly be destinations for LeBron if he does decide to ask for a trade.

Windhorst added that every team he spoke with was unprepared and "caught flat-footed" by the idea of James possibly getting traded.

That report came on the heels of James' longtime agent and business partner, Rich Paul, announcing Sunday that LeBron had exercised the $52.6 million player option in his contract for the 2025-26 season.

As part of the announcement, Paul provided a statement to ESPN's Shams Charania in which he seemed to suggest James could seek a trade if he isn't satisfied with the Lakers offseason moves in terms of getting them into championship contention:

"LeBron wants to compete for a championship. He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all. We are very appreciative of the partnership that we've had for eight years with [governor] Jeanie [Buss] and [general manager] Rob [Pelinka] and consider the Lakers as a critical part of his career.

"We understand the difficulty in winning now while preparing for the future. We do want to evaluate what's best for LeBron at this stage in his life and career. He wants to make every season he has left count, and the Lakers understand that, are supportive and want what's best for him."

LeBron has spent the past seven seasons with the Lakers, matching his initial run with the Cleveland Cavaliers as his most consecutive seasons with a single team.

James won his fourth career championship with the Lakers in 2020, by playoff success has been hard to come by since then, as L.A. has made it out of the first round just once in the past five seasons.

However, the Lakers are coming off a 50-32 season, which was their best record since last winning a championship. It was good for the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference, although they fell to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round.

A lack of quality play in the frontcourt was the biggest culprit for the Lakers' loss to the T-Wolves, and adding at least one legitimate starting center will undoubtedly be Pelinka's top priority this offseason.

Pelinka made one huge move during the 2024-25 campaign, acquiring superstar guard Luka Dončić in a shocking trade with the Dallas Mavericks.

Dončić gives the Lakers one of the NBA's best one-two punches with James, and assuming they are able to sign him to a long-term contract extension, he also gives L.A. a star who can take over as the face of the franchise once James is gone.

Even as he prepares to enter a record-breaking 23rd NBA season, James is still among the best players in the game, as evidenced by his averages of 24.4 points, 8.2 assists and 7.8 rebounds per game last season at the age of 40.

Because of that, a LeBron trade would perhaps shift the NBA's balance of power and make the acquiring team the new team to beat next season.
