Micah Parsons, Cowboys Reportedly Expected to Sign Historic Contract in 'Coming Weeks'
The Dallas Cowboys and star edge-rusher Micah Parsons are making progress toward a massive contract extension, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Schefter reported Thursday on Get Up that "most people believe that a deal will get done for Micah Parsons at some point this summer."
"And when it does get done, it is expected to make him the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history," the NFL insider said. "It will be a huge number. It should surpass Myles Garrett. It'll give Micah Parsons that distinction. And most people believe that deal will get done at some point here in the coming weeks."
The Dallas Morning News' Calvin Watkins reported in March that Parsons was looking to get around $200 million overall and a $40.3 million annual salary. Those figures would reset the market on both fronts.
Among defensive players, San Francisco 49ers star Nick Bosa currently has the biggest payout ($170 million), while the Cleveland Browns' Myles Garrett became the first to crack $40 million a year.
Based on pretty much every past precedent, it stands to reason Parsons will surpass Garrett. He's an elite pass-rusher who only turned 26 in May. It would be a bit of a shock if he doesn't become the NFL's highest-paid defensive player.
The absence of a long-term agreement between the Cowboys and Parsons has been a subplot of the team's offseason, yet it hasn't created much drama.
The four-time Pro Bowler reported to mandatory minicamp and said this month he'll attend training camp, though he may not be a full participant without a new contract.
"Some people like to take their time more than others, you know what I mean?" Parsons told reporters. "You can't rush the process, [Jerry Jones] wants the deal to go as cleanly as possible, I want the deal to go as cleanly as possible, so it's just about getting it done as cleanly and quickly as possible."
Last year, Dallas and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb didn't make their breakthrough in negotiations until late August. By that measure, the Cowboys are ahead of schedule with Parsons.
