White Sox Reportedly Open to Including Money in Luis Robert Jr., Benintendi Trades

Jack MurrayJun 20, 2025

The Chicago White Sox are reportedly not afraid to spend money to offload some contracts.

Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic reported that the White Sox are "open" to sending money to teams willing to take on the contracts of outfielders Andrew Benintendi and Luis Robert Jr. to get a deal done.

"The Chicago White Sox recognize they are in no position to impose the same conditions on teams that express interest in their two most expensive players, outfielders Andrew Benintendi and Luis Robert Jr," Rosenthal and Sammon wrote. "In both cases, according to sources briefed on the team’s plans, the White Sox are open to including cash in trades."

Benintendi has two years remaining on his contract after the 2025 season. He is set to make $16.5 million in 2026 and $14.5 million in 2027, per Spotrac.

He is hitting .246/.309/.444 with seven home runs and 27 RBIs in 48 games for the White Sox in 2025. This production is a far cry from his days with the Boston Red Sox and Kansas City Royals, but he still can be a solid contact bat against right-handed pitching.

Robert should be a bit easier to move as he is less of a financial commitment in the long term. He could hit free agency after 2025 as his contract includes team options for 2026 and 2027, per Spotrac. With that in mind, he could just be a rental.

He is hitting .190/.273/.303 with six home runs and 28 RBI in 67 games so far in 2025. This dismal production makes him an odd add for a contending team, but a change of scenery could be just what the former All-Star needs to recoup some value.

While parting with money could be tough to swallow for Chicago, the team has a payroll that ranks just 27th in MLB, per Spotrac. That, and the reality that the team is 23-52 on the season, makes shaking up the core and parting with depreciating assets a reasonable option.
