Red Sox, Giants Payrolls, Projected Lineups After Rafael Devers Blockbuster Trade

Andrew PetersJun 15, 2025

Rafael Devers is on the move for the first time in his career.

The Boston Red Sox dealt the designated hitter to San Francisco Giants in return for pitchers Jordan Hicks and Kyle Harrison and outfield prospect James Tibbs.

With Devers, who has been with the Red Sox his entire career, now on his way to San Francisco, here's a look at the projected lineups for the two squads.

San Francisco Giants Projected Lineup

  1. Jung Hoo Lee
  2. Willy Adames
  3. Rafael Devers
  4. Matt Chapman
  5. Heliot Ramos
  6. Wilmer Flores
  7. Mike Yastrzemski
  8. Patrick Bailey
  9. Tyler Fitzgerald

Boston Red Sox Projected Lineup

  1. Jarren Durran
  2. Abraham Toro
  3. Carlos Narváez
  4. Roman Anthony
  5. Trevor Story
  6. Alex Bregman
  7. Kristian Campbell
  8. David Hamilton
  9. Ceddanne Rafaela

*Lineups are when fully healthy. Chapman (San Francisco) and Bregman (Boston) are among the players currently on the injured list for the two teams.

While Boston lost a talented hitter in Devers, it didn't have to take on any of the money remaining on his 11-year, $331 million contract, per ESPN's Jeff Passan. The Red Sox now have an adjusted payroll of $188.773 million, per Spotrac.

Devers is now the most expensive player on the Giants' payroll, and their adjusted payroll is now $192.248 million, per Spotrac.

The trade came after months of dispute between Devers and the Red Sox over his position. Devers initially said that he'd refuse to play designated hitter if Boston traded for Alex Bregman, but he ultimately made the switch.

After getting comfortable in the designated hitter spot, the Red Sox in May asked him to move to first base since Triston Casas is expected to miss the rest of the season. He was not happy about the request.

Now, Devers is on his way out and will no longer have to go back and forth with the Red Sox regarding his position.

Devers, 28, should give San Francisco's lineup an immediate boost. He's hit 15 home runs and 58 RBI and has a .272 batting average through 73 games. The Giants rank 20th in home runs (69), 15th in RBI (290) and 24th in batting average (.233).

Still, they're in second place in a tough NL West and sit just a game behind the Los Angeles Dodgers. Devers might not fix all of San Francisco's offensive woes, but he could certainly help shift things in the right direction.
