Rafael Devers, Giants Scheduled to Play Red Sox Less Than 1 Week After Trade
Rafael Devers won't have to wait long to face his former team following his trade from the Boston Red Sox to the San Francisco Giants on Sunday.
The Giants are scheduled to host the Red Sox in a three-game series starting on Friday.
Boston dealt Devers to San Francisco in exchange for a package that consisted of left-handed starter Kyle Harrison, right-hander Jordan Hicks, outfield prospect James Tibbs and minor-league reliever Jose Bello.
FanSided's Robert Murray first reported the deal.
The move came as a surprise, with the July 31 trade deadline still several weeks away.
Peter Abraham of The Boston Globe reported that Boston's "feeling" was that the three-time All-Star's hefty contract came with "responsibilities to do what is right for the team and that Devers did not live up to those responsibilities."
The Red Sox "had enough and they traded him," per Abraham.
Devers signed an 11-year extension worth $331 million with the team in January 2023.
He spent the majority of his first eight years in Boston at third base, although the team approached him regarding a move to designated hitter for his 2025 campaign after giving Alex Bregman a three-year deal worth $120 million in free agency.
Devers didn't want to switch positions at first, but later agreed to the move.
Following a season-ending knee injury to Triston Casas, the Red Sox came to him again and asked about moving to first base. Devers rejected the proposal.
His dismissal of another position change led to a meeting with Red Sox owner John Henry to address the disconnect between both sides.
For the Giants, the addition of Devers should immediately help a lineup attempting to keep pace with the Los Angeles Dodgers at the top of the National League West standings. San Francisco owns a 41-30 record, sitting one game back from Los Angeles.
The 28-year-old has recorded 15 home runs and 58 RBIs while posting a .905 OPS to open the 2025 season. His 56 walks are also the second-most in the majors.
Devers' first chance to play against Boston will come on Friday at 10:15 p.m. ET.
