Anthony Richardson Reportedly Expected to Be Ready for Colts Training Camp amid Injury

Taylyn Hadley Jun 13, 2025

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson is expected to be “OK” after a shoulder injury scare during the team’s minicamp, with a second opinion confirming the positive news, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

The 23-year-old will not require surgery and should be ready to go by training camp and set for the start of the season, per Rapoport.

Colts head coach Shane Steichen first addressed the issue by saying Richardson “will not participate in minicamp next week” amid early concerns about an AC joint injury and uncertainty surrounding its severity.

However, after Richardson visited the same doctor who previously treated his AC joint issue, it was determined he “just needs rest and time for right now,” according to ESPN’s Stephen Holder.

With two seasons under his belt, Richardson—the No. 4 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft out of Florida—has struggled to find consistency at the next level. He earned the starting job last season, throwing for 1,814 yards with eight touchdowns and 12 interceptions before being benched in late October in favor of veteran Joe Flacco after leading the team to a 4-4 start.

“Coaches met this morning and made the seismic organizational decision to change QBs,” NFL insider Adam Schefter reported at the time.

Richardson started two more games three weeks later before being benched again, but on Nov. 13, the Colts officially handed the reins back to the young quarterback after a 1-3 stretch under Flacco.

Colts CEO Carlie Irsay-Gordon remains optimistic about the young quarterback’s future despite his early struggles.

“We drafted Anthony for a reason, and we believe in him,” Irsay-Gordon said. “He’s incredibly talented, and sometimes when you draft players, they have rough starts, they have injuries, they’ve got those things that they need to go through. But I think it’s way too early to tell... I think he’s — he has all the potential in the world, and if he wants to prove it, he can. And he will, if he wants to.”

The Colts will kick off their regular season at home against the Miami Dolphins on Sept. 7.
