Chapman seemed to be on the downside of his career after a few rough years, at least by his standards, recently. He had the highest ERA of his career in 2022 (4.46) and had four of his five worst seasons by strikeout-to-walk ratio from 2021 to '24.
The Red Sox signed Chapman to a one-year deal worth $10.8 million in December 2024. He has responded by posting a 1.04 ERA, 74 strikeouts and 26 saves in 2025.
Boston's addition of Chapman was part of a notable offseason that also saw the team acquire Garrett Crochet in a trade and sign Alex Bregman as a free agent.
Optimism was high coming into 2025 thanks to those additions, as well as a farm system led by three top-10 prospects in Roman Anthony, Marcelo Mayer and Kristian Campbell.
Given Chapman's age (he will turn 38 on Feb. 29) and contract, he wasn't likely to be a long-term solution in Boston's bullpen. The club opted to maintain continuity late in games by keeping him around.
The Red Sox will be counting on Chapman to be a dominant force late in games as they build around a promising young core and look to get back to the playoffs.
