How Every MLB Roster Would Look with No Trades or Free-Agent Signings
Who is ready for the hypothetical of all hypotheticals when it comes to what could have been for your favorite MLB team?
Let's imagine for a second there is no free agency and there are no trades—teams simply keep the players they draft and sign as amateur free agents for the duration of their careers.
This was more or less what baseball looked like before the start of free agency in 1976, and while there was the occasional trade, it was far more common for a player to spend his entire career in one uniform.
Only active players were considered for this exercise, and if at all possible, players who have yet to make their MLB debut were avoided, though in some cases (Nationals shortstop) some creativity was required.
International players with significant professional experience overseas were not considered, so you won't see Shohei Ohtani in the Angels lineup or Yu Darvish in the Rangers rotation.
There was also some defensive shifting to create the best possible lineup, though players could only be moved to a position they have played at the MLB level. For example, Matt Thaiss filled a void at third base for the Angels, though he is now primarily a catcher.
Each hypothetical roster is made up of a standard starting lineup, five starting pitchers and two relief pitchers. The DH spot was available to whoever the best hitter was without a spot in the starting lineup.
