Jannik Sinner Beats Novak Djokovic in French Open Semifinal Bracket at Roland-Garros
World No. 1 Jannik Sinner defeated Novak Djokovic in straight sets—6-4, 7-5, 7-6 (3)—on Friday evening to advance to the French Open men's singles final against Carlos Alcaraz.
Sinner had a better win percentage on his first serve (79 percent to 67 percent) and second serve (63 percent to 58 percent). He also had 10 aces to Djokovic's four. Sinner also made the most of his break point opportunities (3-of-9) compared to the 24-time Grand Slam singles winner (1-of-6).
Djokovic committed 17 more unforced errors than Sinner (53-36) as well.
In the first set, Sinner broke Djokovic with the score tied at two games apiece. He nearly broke Djokovic again on the next go-around, earning two break point opportunities, but Djokovic held. Ultimately, Sinner never broke much of a sweat in the first set, losing just three points total when he was serving.
The second set was a little nervier for Sinner. He broke Djokovic to take a 4-3 lead, but the three-time French Open champion rallied back for a break of his own to tie the set at five. Sinner immediately responded, though, by breaking Djovkovic and then holding serve for the 7-5 win.
Things got even more tense in the third set. Djokovic had a break point up 2-1 but could not convert. Sinner then forced two break points on Djokovic, but the latter player held.
Djokovic then found himself with a 5-4 edge with two set points in hand up 40-15. Sinner fought back for deuce, but Djokovic then earned a point for his third set point. The World's No. 1 player continued his fight, though, and held on to keep the set going.
Both players held one more time, forcing a tiebreaker.
Sinner immediately got a point on Djokovic's serve for a 1-0 lead. He got another point on his serve, but Djokovic had a prime opportunity to get a point back right at the net. However, he slammed the ball into the net, falling down 3-0.
Djokovic held his serve on his next two points, but Sinner did the same for his two. He then won two of the next three points for the straight-sets victory.
Sinner is now 5-4 lifetime against Djokovic, winning his last four matches against him. He now faces last year's French Open champion in Alcaraz in a match between World No. 1 and World No. 2.
Alcaraz has a 7-4 record lifetime against Sinner, including 2-1 on clay. He notably beat Sinner in the Italian Open final earlier this year and in the French Open semifinals last year.
