Buster Posey Puts Pressure on Giants Offense After LaMonte Wade DFA, 'It’s Time To Go'

Timothy RappJun 4, 2025

The San Francisco Giants designated popular first baseman LaMonte Wade for assignment on Wednesday after he struggled immensely to start the 2025 season, hitting just .167 with a single home run.

The Giants have started the season 33-28 but rank just 18th in runs (250), and team president of baseball operations Buster Posey made it clear that the offense is in need of some sort of jolt.

"One of the trickier things for me is there are still guys on the team that I played with. I had a different relationship with them as a player than I do now, but still consider LaMonte a buddy," he told reporters. "So it wasn't an easy thing to do, but we got to get some offense going."

"It's time to go," he added. "I think we all believe that we're better than what we've been with the bats the last two-and-a-half, three weeks. It's time to go."

Catcher Sam Huff was also DFA'd and utility infielder Christian Koss was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento in corresponding moves, while the team also signed Dominic Smith.

"We're not satisfied with the production, so we're trying to exhaust all options," Posey told reporters.

Injuries have also contributed to the offense's woes, with Jerar Encarnación just returning from the 60-day injured list.

But there aren't many excuses for going 16 straight games with four runs scored or fewer, the second-longest stretch under those parameters in franchise history. The Giants are averaging just two runs per game during the stretch and are 7-9 amidst the offensive drought.

"The best teams in history have gone through stretches where they have struggles like this, but everyone in this room believes in ourselves," pitcher Logan Webb told reporters. "It's the beginning of June, we've got four months of baseball left, and we really love our guys in here—it's a really united team."

The pitching staff has done its job, ranking second in baseball in team ERA (3.03), tied for fifth in quality starts (28) and eighth in opponent batting average (.231). If the bats get going, this will be a scary team.

It's a big if, and one that Posey clearly will try to address in a proactive manner.
