Novak Djokovic Defeats Zverev, Updated French Open Men's Bracket at Roland-Garros

Joseph ZuckerJun 4, 2025

Novak Djokovic cleared a major hurdle in pursuit of a fourth Roland-Garros title, defeating No. 3 Alexander Zverev 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 in the quarterfinals on Wednesday in Paris.

The road doesn't get any easier, though, with top-seeded Jannik Sinner awaiting in the next round. Sinner and Djokovic have split their eight head-to-head meetings, though Sinner has claimed victory in four of their last five matches.

Djokovic has had an up-and-down 2025 season, with the 38-year-old showing his age a bit more and inching closer toward his eventual retirement. The last time he faced off with Zverev, an injury forced him out of the semifinals after dropping the first set.

When Zverev took the opening set in Wednesday's match, a lot of fans might've been thinking history would repeat itself. Instead, Djokovic turned the tables with a combination of consistency and precision that was peak Djoker.

Zverev would seemingly have the upper hand on the 24-time Grand Slam champion, only to have the rug pulled out from under him like on this quick rally in the second set. Djokovic gets pushed wide to his backhand side and somehow hits the perfect passing shot.

Despite being down two sets to one, Zverev still had a sliver of hope midway through the third. He was trailing 2-3 but had a break-point opportunity, and evening things at three games apiece gave him a chance.

Djokovic had other plans as he ended a 41-shot rally with a cross court forehand that eluded Zverev at the net. He went on to hold serve.

Djokovic went on to hold serve and in his next two service games to secure the win.

Sinner has been brilliant on the Roland-Garros clay so far, winning his first five matches all in straight sets. Earlier on Wednesday, he swept Alexander Bublik aside 6-1, 7-5, 6-0 and totaled 31 winners to just 13 unforced errors.

The 23-year-old is looking a strong bet to lift his first title in the French capital.

And yet, Djokovic remains capable of digging deep and reaching an almost untouchable level. If he can replicate this kind of performance against Sinner, their semifinal battle will be an instant classic.
