Sabalenka Beats Qinwen, Updated French Open Women's Bracket at Roland-Garros
Top-seeded Aryna Sabalenka defeated No. 8 Qinwen Zheng 7-6 (3), 6-3, in the French Open quarterfinals on Tuesday to advance to her second Roland-Garros semifinal in the past three years.
The 27-year-old Sabalenka continued her dominant run in Paris, as she has yet to drop a set over the first five rounds.
Sabalenka is now just two wins away from winning her fourth career Grand Slam singles title and taking another step toward the career Grand Slam.
The hard-hitting Sabalenka dominated Tuesday with her power as she often does, winning 60 percent of her first-serve points and 68 percent of her second-serve points, while firing off six aces.
In the first set, Sabalenka and Zheng broke each other's serve one time each, which led to a tiebreak that Sabalenka won in dominant fashion.
Sabalenka and Zheng traded breaks in the second set to make it 3-3, but it was all Sabalenka from that point forward, as she won the final three games, including two breaks of Zheng.
Tuesday undoubtedly marked Sabalenka's toughest test thus far at Roland-Garros, as she didn't lose more than three games in a set over her first three matches, and then beat Amanda Anisimova 7-5, 6-3, in the fourth round.
Zheng, 22, has never won a Grand Slam singles title, has reached only one Grand Slam singles final and had never made it past the fourth round of the French Open until this year.
However, she has a recent history of major success at Roland-Garros, as Zheng won the gold medal in women's singles at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
By beating the reigning Olympic champion, Sabalenka has now reached at least the semifinals at nine of the past 10 Grand Slam tournaments she has played in.
That includes Australian Open titles in 2023 and 2024, as well as the 2024 U.S. Open title.
In the first Grand Slam of 2025, Sabalenka lost a three-set thriller to Madison Keys in the Aussie Open final, denying the Belarusian star a third consecutive title in Melbourne.
There has been no letdown from that loss, as Sabalenka is playing better than ever despite clay not being her preferred surface.
By virtue of her victory over Zheng, Sabalenka will play her semifinal match Thursday against the winner of Tuesday's matchup between fifth-seeded, four-time French Open champ Iga Świątek and No. 13 Elina Svitolina.
