Novak Djokovic Defeats Alexander Zverev In Five-Set Classic

3 of 6
2025 French Open - Day Nine
Novak Djokovic

To have a realistic chance of winning a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title, Novak Djokovic needed to minimize fatigue during the early rounds.

And that's precisely what the Serbian did.

Djokovic has yet to drop a set this week, displaying his most consistent tennis of the year.

While Djokovic hasn't faced significant challenges this week, opponents such as Corentin Moutet and Cam Norrie have compelled him to engage in physical rallies, an environment in which he has proven to thrive thus far.

The task will only get more difficult with Alexander Zverev looming in the quarterfinal.

The top-ranked German reached the final a year ago and enters with fresh legs after his fourth-round opponent, Tallon Griekspoor, was forced to retire in the middle of the second set.

Alexander Zverev has the tools to defeat Djokovic, and his mental game will be key; if he can limit unforced errors and play aggressively, he can win.

But, given the current form of Djokovic and what's at stake for the Serbian, he should be able to escape this in five sets.

Jannik Sinner Coasts Yet Again

4 of 6
2025 French Open - Day Nine

Jannik Sinner has, without a doubt, been the top performer at Roland-Garros.

In fact, no one has been as dominant as the Italian since October 23, 2023.

Since then, the 23-year-old has won 103 of 111 ATP Tour matches and three Grand Slams.

The three-time major champion has yet to drop a set this entire week, while losing just three of his service games.

He's developed a dominant first serve, the most blistering yet consistent groundstrokes, and, most importantly, can endure any level of physicality—often using his intensity as a way to overwhelm his opponents.

Alexander Bublik has had a phenomenal week.

He's won as many matches here this year as he has in his previous six career main-draw appearances.

Yes, he's defeated two top-ten players this week, but the likelihood of defeating Sinner is improbable.

He can remain competitive in the match with his serve, forehand, and versatile playing style, but it will require a herculean effort from Bublik, and possibly even more, to achieve what would be the biggest upset of the year.

Coco Gauff Bests Madison Keys in all-American Thriller

5 of 6
2025 French Open - Day Nine
Coco Gauff

Coco Gauff has reached the quarterfinal at Roland-Garros for the fifth consecutive year.

The 21-year-old American played her best match yet in the fourth round, saving 8 of 9 breakpoints, and most importantly, committing just 17 unforced errors.

But the path forward gets significantly tougher with Madison Keys.

The two players have an even record of 3-3 against each other, but Madison Keys won their only match on clay in 2024.

Gauff enters as the slight favorite, but if Keys can hit her first serve well and stay aggressive, this has the makings of a three-set thriller.

For Gauff, it'll be of utmost importance to really limit the double faults and unforced errors.

She'll need to come out with a clear game plan to defeat her fellow American competitor.

In the end, she should be able to do just enough to clear this hurdle and punch her ticket to the semifinals.

Lois Boisson's Dream Run Comes To An End

2025 French Open - Day Nine
Lois Boisson

Few outside of French tennis circles had heard of Loïs Boisson a week ago.

After all, the world No. 361 entered the 2025 French Open with just one WTA main-draw victory under her name and $148,009 in career prize money.

There was little reason to suggest she’d defeat first-round opponent Elise Mertens, who’d made at least the third round in all nine of her appearances at Roland-Garros.

What a difference a week can make.

The 22-year-old has since tripled her career earnings, become the first French woman to reach the French Open quarterfinals since Caroline Garcia in 2017, and defeated World No. 3 Jessica Pegula behind a sold-out home crowd on Court Philippe-Chatrier.

She'll need to play inspired tennis to defeat Mirra Andreeva, who has reached at least the quarterfinal for the second consecutive year.

But that may not cut it against the 18-year-old wunderkind, who has developed into such a consistent player with a top-notch ability to redirect rallies and dictate pace.
