Yankees Call Up 6'7" Prospect 📈
ESPN's Jeff Passan first reported on Sunday that the Royals planned to call up Caglianone from Triple-A Omaha.
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes responded with excitement about the reported move:
Caglianone was the No. 6 pick of the 2024 draft. He is ranked as the No. 10 overall prospect by MLB Pipeline.
The Royals promoted Caglianone to Triple-A on May 19 after the 22-year-old slashed .322/.394/.553 through 38 games with Double-A Northwest Arkansas.
Caglianone has since batted. .319 at the next level, including a stretch during which he hit six home runs in eight Triple-A games.
Caglianone recently told The Athletic's Mitch Sherman that he has noticed the hype surrounding his eventual call-up to the majors.
“It makes me feel pretty good,” Caglianone told Sherman. “I haven’t even been there yet, and I can already feel the love from the people of Kansas City. So I’m super thankful for it. Hopefully it stays that way.”
Caglianone, who spent his college career as a pitcher and first baseman at Florida, made his first pro start in the outfield during a Double-A game in April.
Since then, he has been coached at the position by former Royals outfield coach Rusty Kuntz, who helped future World Series winner Alex Gordon transition from third base to outfield in 2010.
That switch might have upped the timeline for Caglianone's first call-up to Kansas City. Royals outfielders are slashing a combined .230/.293/.316 through 59 games, and the club recently released veteran outfielder Hunter Renfroe.
General manager J.J. Picollo recently noted that the Royals want to prioritize Caglianone's development and are wary of starting out his MLB career by tasking him with revitalizing a struggling offense, per Passan.
If Caglianone does make his first MLB appearance, however, the Royals would love to see his power hitting translate to the majors as the team looks to gain ground in the AL Central.
