Arthur Fils Withdraws from French Open After Suffering Injury at Roland-Garros
Arthur Fils withdrew from the French Open on Friday due to an unspecified injury, per the Associated Press.
While the exact issue that forced him to pull out of the tournament wasn't revealed, he spoke about back pain after defeating Jaume Munar on Thursday.
“Got some issue with the back, but that’s since I’m young so I’m used to (it),” Fils said, via the Associated Press. “And also the cramps. A bit of everything. The mix was not very good.”
He was set to play Andrey Rublev in Saturday's third round.
Rublev will now advance to the fourth round, where he'll face off against the winner of Saturday's clash between Jiří Lehečka and Jannik Sinner.
“Hello everyone, it’s with sadness that I am forced to withdraw from this tournament that I love," Fils said in a statement posted on social media after he was forced to withdraw (via Charlie Eccleshare of The Athletic).
“A difficult decision, but necessary after medical advice," he wrote. "Thank you to everyone for your support. I look forward to returning to Roland Garros next year.”
Fils appeared to suffer the injury in the third set of his 7-6 (3), 7-6 (4), 2-6, 0-6, 6-4 victory over Munar. He received treatment for the issue and looked stiff in the third and fourth sets before rallying to seal the win in the fifth.
Fils, the No. 14 seed, was the last French player in the draw at Roland-Garros.
An exact timeline regarding the 20-year-old's eventual return is unknown, but he's included on the entry list for the Libema Open in the Netherlands. The Libema Open will begin on June 9.
