ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Smith will get a one-year, $12 million contract extension in the deal.
Pelissero noted the Dolphins are now exploring the tight end market after the Smith deal:
Meanwhile, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reported receiver Gabe Davis is still a free-agent option for Pittsburgh.
The 29-year-old Smith, an eight-year NFL veteran, enjoyed his most productive pro season in 2024, catching 88 passes for 884 yards and eight touchdowns. He caught fire over the season's final eight games, snagging 55 passes for 537 yards and seven scores.
Smith spent his first four seasons with the Tennessee Titans before signing a four-year, $50 million contract with the New England Patriots. He capped his Titans career (2017-2020) with an eight-touchdown season.
It didn't work out in New England, though, with Smith catching just 55 passes for 539 yards and one touchdown over his two seasons.
The Pats then traded Smith to the Atlanta Falcons in March 2023. He fared better in Atlanta, catching 50 passes for 582 yards and three touchdowns.
After the season, the Falcons released Smith. During the 2024 offseason, Smith signed a two-year, $8.4 million contract with the Dolphins, which included $3.96 million in guaranteed money, per Over the Cap.
Then Smith enjoyed his breakout season. However, on May 29, Schefter reported that Miami was speaking with the Steelers about potentially trading Smith, who had "expressed an interest in reworking his deal."
It wasn't a surprise to see Smith interested in a new deal after his excellent 2024 campaign, when he was one of the NFL's most productive tight ends in the back half of the season.
However, that deal won't come with the Dolphins, who have traded him to a Steelers team that sorely needed another pass-catcher after dealing wide receiver George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys for a third-round pick.
In Pittsburgh, Smith will form a one-two punch at tight end with Pat Freiermuth, while newly acquired wide receiver DK Metcalf becomes the team's No. 1 target.
Smith also notably reunites with his old Titans offensive coordinator, Arthur Smith, who is now the Steelers' OC.
