Tommy Paul, Ben Shelton, and Frances Tiafoe All Move On
3 of 4
The top three American men in play on Sunday all advanced.
No. 15 seed Frances Tiafoe won in straight sets behind a dominant serving performance and impressive net play.
Tommy Paul struggled early, committing 20 unforced errors in the opening set before ultimately prevailing in four sets.
But it was the final men's match of the day that produced a thriller.
22-year-old American Ben Shelton overcame a two-set-to-one deficit against an in-form Lorenzo Sonego behind a barrage of blistering serves and booming forehands to move on to the second round.
None of the three American men have ever advanced beyond the third round of the French Open, but each faces a favorable path and is always capable of making a deep run.
Aryna Sabalenka Dominates, Jasmine Paolini Survives Upset Scare
4 of 4
Aryna Sabalenka's start to the French Open can be summarized in one word: dominant.
The world No. 1 needed just 61 minutes to cruise to a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Kamilla Rakhimova.
Sabalenka saved both of her break points and hit only 17 unforced errors.
The three-time Grand Slam champion will face Jil Teichmann in the second round.
Meanwhile, last year's runner-up Jasmine Paolini got off to a strong start against Yue Yuan but later struggled, committing 12 unforced errors in the second set, just one fewer than the first and third sets combined.
In the third set, both players traded service breaks; however, Paolini was able to do just enough in the end.
