Tommy Paul Describes 'Funny Experience' as Truck is Repossessed Ahead of Roland-Garros
Tommy Paul was all smiles after his first-round victory over Elmer Moller at the French Open, in addition to getting his truck back after it was repossessed due to a banking mix-up.
Speaking to reporters following Sunday's win, Paul explained the "funny experience" of getting his vehicle returned to him after creditors took it away while he was playing in the Italian Open:
"I missed, I think it was, like three payments. They came and took it. I didn't know it happened like that. I didn't know how quick they would come and grab it—like in the middle of the night. Now I'm watching all these 'repo' shows, where they come in and swoop trucks at 1 in the morning. It's definitely a funny experience. To be in Europe while it happened is even crazier. But we did get it back."
Paul said the situation was caused when he changed banks and forgot to adjust the automatic payment information. He initially revealed the truck had been repossessed following his quarterfinal match at the Italian Open on May 15.
"Ford took it back. I'm excited to get it back," Paul told reporters. "I had to win a couple matches so I could pay that off."
Paul said on Sunday that he originally thought the vehicle was being stolen when he went back to view security footage and saw a tow truck taking it away.
The situation doesn't seem to have impacted Paul's focus on the tennis court. He reached the semifinal at the Italian Open before losing to No. 1 seed Jannik Sinner in three sets, then won his opener at Roland Garros in four sets.
