Red Sox's Alex Bregman Has 'Significant' Quad Injury, Will Be Out 'A While,' Cora Says
After exiting Friday's game in the third inning, Boston Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman has been placed on the injured list and could miss an extended period of time.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora told reporters after the first game of a doubleheader against the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday that Bregman has a "significant" injury. He added that the veteran is "going to be out for a while."

Bregman also told reporters the injury is "pretty severe" and that there's no timetable for how long he might be out.
The news comes after Cora confirmed to reporters that Bregman would have imaging done on Saturday to determine the extent of the injury.
Cora also noted Rafael Devers is unlikely to take over at third base if Bregman goes on the injured list, and shortstop prospect Marcelo Mayer has since been called up by the team.
Bregman's injury occurred when he singled off Orioles pitcher Cade Povich and took a big turn around first base before returning to the bag. He signaled for a trainer and almost immediately walked off the field into the locker room.
The Orioles and Red Sox were scheduled to play a doubleheader on Friday, but the second game was rained out. They rescheduled it for Saturday, with Boston taking the first game 6-5 in extra innings.
Bregman told reporters after Friday's game he felt good "so far," but they would learn more after a night of sleep to see how his quad would respond:
"Obviously, it's just day to day. I feel like we'll know a lot more tomorrow after sleeping and seeing how it presents in the morning. But all my strength is still there right now, which is good so far. So it's just kind of a day-to-day thing at this point and kind of see when I wake up tomorrow how it feels."
In describing the injury, Bregman went on to say he had a quad injury during the 2021 season with the Houston Astros that felt "way worse" than this one. He spent more than two months on the IL due to that injury.
Losing Bregman for any length of time is a huge blow to Boston's lineup. He is hitting .299/.385/.553 and is tied for second on the team with 11 homers in 51 games.
Eric Sogard is starting at third base in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader. Mayer, the No. 3 prospect in Boston's farm system coming into 2025, is hitting .271/.347/.471 with nine homers in 43 games at Triple-A.
