Anthony Davis Reportedly Has Surgery for Eye Injury, Expected to Return for Mavs Camp
Dallas Mavericks star Anthony Davis had surgery to repair a detached retina this offseason, according to ESPN's Shams Charania.
Davis is expected to be ready for training camp.
The 10-time All-Star was dealing with an abdominal strain when the Mavericks acquired him from the Los Angeles Lakers, and it didn't take long for the longstanding concerns over his durability to be reaffirmed.
Davis suffered a left adductor strain in his Dallas debut and was sidelined for more than a month. During his absence, Dallas lost star point guard Kyrie Irving for the season due to a torn ACL.
All things considered, claiming a play-in tournament berth was an impressive finish for the Mavericks. Most had written them off because of the injuries to their two best players.
The Mavs then beat the odds even more by winning the 2025 NBA draft lottery, which allowed them to take Duke star Cooper Flagg. The 6'9" forward is poised to be their new long-term cornerstone after they traded Luka Dončić for a package headlined by Davis in February.
As much as Flagg's arrival widens the organization's window for contention by multiple years, general manager Nico Harrison almost certainly isn't pivoting to a reset or outright rebuild. Davis turned 32 in March, so it would be foolish to basically waste a year of his career by design.
Reaching the playoffs will likely be the Mavericks' goal in 2025-26. Keeping AD healthy will be a key component in achieving that aim.
