Caitlin Clark Makes WNBA History with Double-Double as Fever Lose to Griner, Dream

Paul KasabianMay 20, 2025

Caitlin Clark excelled with 27 points and 11 assists, but the Indiana Fever fell at home to the Atlanta Dream 91-90 on Tuesday.

It was another great game for Clark, who now holds the record for most 25-point, 10-assist games in WNBA history despite being just two games into her second season, per Tim Reynolds of the Associated Press.

However, the Fever had trouble stopping the Atlanta offense, which was led by Brittney Griner (21 points, eight rebonds) and Rhyne Howard (20 points).

Indiana trailed 89-80 with 4:09 left but went on a 10-0 run for a 90-89 lead with 21.1 seconds remaining. Howard then got fouled on a shot attempt on the other end and made both her free throws.

After an Indiana timeout, Fever forward Natasha Howard had a shot for the win, but Dream forward Nia Coffey got the block. Howard got her rebound back and took a 12-footer from the baseline, but the potential game-winner was off.

Atlanta then got the board and ran out the final three seconds (while avoiding an Indiana foul attempt to extend the game) for the win.

It was another gream game for Clark after she had 20 points, 10 dimes and 10 boards in a dominant 93-58 home win over the Chicago Sky in the regular season opener last Saturday.

However, the end result was different, as the Fever struggled to stop the Dream on offense, specifically during a 32-point third quarter that gave Atlanta a 76-65 lead headed into the fourth. Rhyne Howard notably hit a trio of threes in the third.

Clark got hot in the fourth in response, hitting back-to-back threes to cut the Dream lead to 80-76. She hit five threes on the evening.

But then Griner had a strong fourth, making a pair of layups while Indiana got cold in the middle of the frame. The 10-time WNBA All-Star is playing her first season in Atlanta after 11 campaigns with the Phoenix Mercury.

Indiana didn't go down without a fight, though, thanks to the 10-0 run. Kelsey Mitchell began the run with a three before Clark and then Aliyah Boston notably hit back-to-back buckets to cut the Atlanta edge to 89-87 with 1:21 left. Another Mitchell bucket (off a Boston assist) tied the matchup, and then Boston made one-of-two free throws with 21.1 seconds left for the 90-89 edge.

All three played great on this night. Mitchell and Boston each finished with 24 points, with the latter player also adding 10 rebounds.

However, a win wasn't meant to be, as the Fever fell to 1-1. Indiana will now visit the defending champion New York Liberty on Saturday at 1 p.m. ET.
