Spurs Reportedly Not Seeking Trade of No. 2 NBA Draft Pick amid Harper, Giannis Rumors

Andrew PetersMay 14, 2025

After the San Antonio Spurs landed the No. 2 pick in the 2025 NBA draft, the question quickly became whether they would try to trade that pick for Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo.

But the Spurs are reportedly already indicating to teams that they plan to keep the No. 2 selection and use it to pick Rutgers star Dylan Harper, ESPN's Jonathan Givony said on NBA Today.

"The San Antonio Spurs are signaling to teams that they are very excited about the opportunity to draft Dylan Harper," Givony said. "They are not pursuing trades from what we're hearing. They think that they can play Harper together with Steph Castle and De'Aaron Fox in the same backcourt."

ESPN's Shams Charania reported Monday that Antetokounmpo "has not made any firm decisions on his Bucks future" but "is open-minded about exploring whether his best long-term fit is remaining in Milwaukee or playing elsewhere."

After that report, a handful of teams emerged as possible candidates, and the Spurs seemed like one of them. ESPN's Marc J. Spears reported on NBA Today on Tuesday that San Antonio is "going to be open-minded" about possibly trading the No. 2 pick.

Based on Givony's report on Wednesday, the Spurs might not be as willing to give away that coveted pick as they initially seemed.

Things could change in between now and the draft, and it might be difficult for San Antonio to pass on a trade for Antetokounmpo if the Bucks present one. After all, Antetokounmpo is still in the prime of his career, putting up 30.4 points, 11.9 rebounds and 6.5 assists per game this season.

Landing Antetokounmpo would immediately turn the Spurs into a Finals contender.

But the argument against trading for Antetokounmpo is that the future of San Antonio is clearly young star Victor Wembanyama. In just his second season, Wembanyama averaged 24.3 points, 11 rebounds and 3.8 blocks per game.

With Wembanyama on his way to becoming an MVP-caliber player, the Spurs could instead opt to continue building around him.

If San Antonio chooses to add talent through the draft rather than a blockbuster trade, Harper could be the way to go. Duke's Cooper Flagg is essentially a lock to go to the Dallas Mavericks at No. 1, but Harper will likely be the best player available at No. 2. He averaged 19.4 points, 4.6 rebounds and four assists in his sole season with the Scarlet Knights.

Bleacher Report's Jonathan Wasserman projects the Spurs to take Harper at No. 2.
