Bud Black Fired as Rockies Manager Amid MLB-Worst 7-33 Record, Historic Pace
Despite a 9-3 win over the San Diego Padres on Sunday, the Colorado Rockies decided it was time for a change.
The Rockies announced after the game that manager Bud Black has been fired amid the team's 7-33 start to the 2025 season. Third base coach Warren Schaeffer was promoted to interim manager.
Bench coach Mike Redmond was also fired and replaced by hitting coach Clint Hurdle on an interim basis.

The news comes one day after Colorado was defeated 21-0 by the San Diego Padres.
Black was in his ninth season as Rockies manager after being hired in 2017. After making back-to-back playoff appearances in his first two years, Colorado has endured six straight losing seasons under his direction. He ends his tenure with a 544-690 record.
"Our play so far this season, especially coming off the last two seasons, has been unacceptable," Rockies owner Dick Monfort said in a statement. "While we all share responsibility in how this season has played out, these changes are necessary. We will use the remainder of 2025 to improve where we can on the field and evaluate all areas of our operation so we can properly turn the page into the next chapter of Rockies Baseball."
As The Athletic's Chris Vannini pointed out, Colorado is on pace for a historic year of futility. The 2024 Chicago White Sox, who set a record with 121 losses, were 11-28 on May 10, while the Rockies already racked up 33 losses following Saturday's 21-0 blowout against the Padres.
Sunday's win snapped an eight-game losing streak for Colorado, but it wasn't enough to save Black's job. The Rockies will try to build on the momentum from the victory as Schaeffer leads them against the Texas Rangers on Monday.
