Gilbert Arenas Says Son Alijah Is 'Fully Recovering,' 'Doing Very Well' After Crash

Scott PolacekMay 6, 2025

Former NBA player Gilbert Arenas provided a positive update on the recovery of his son, Alijah, following a single-car crash that left him hospitalized last month.

"He's doing very well," Arenas said during an appearance on Tuesday's episode of The Dan Patrick Show. "He had some angels with him that morning. Glad he's fully recovering and didn't have any major injuries. That's all we can pray for."

Matt Moret of The Athletic reported the Los Angeles Fire Department said Alijah Arenas hit a fire hydrant and tree while driving his Tesla Cybertruck early in the morning. He was trapped in the car, but bystanders helped pull him out.

Arenas was taken to the hospital and placed into a medically induced coma.

On April 25, ESPN's Shams Charania provided an update from the family revealing he came out of the coma:

"In a remarkable and hopeful development, Alijah Arenas has come out of his coma and has shown significant signs of progress within the last 24 hours," the update said. "In a powerful and emotional moment, Alijah opened his eyes and was able to write on a piece of paper that he remembered smoke and asked, 'Did anyone get hurt?"

On April 28, Josiah Johnson, who co-hosts and serves as the executive producer of Gilbert Arenas' YouTube talk show Gil's Arena, shared an update on the situation as well:

"He was placed in an induced coma as a precautionary measure due to smoke inhalation," Johnson said.

"โ€ฆ Happy to announce that Alijah is doing much better. Just got off the phone with Gil about five minutes ago. Alijah's doing better, walking, talking, progressing very well. He should be released from the hospital very soon. No major injuries as a result of the car accident."

Alijah Arenas is 5-star prospect and the No. 7 overall player in the 2025 recruiting class, per 247Sports' composite rankings.

Gilbert Arenas told Patrick his son is "of course" still going to USC and said Alijah still had his sense of humor at the hospital because he asked his family to tell USC men's basketball coach Eric Musselman he was sorry he was at the UCLA hospital.
