Yankees Reportedly Promote George Lombard Jr. to Double-A, NYY's No. 1 Prospect
After losing Sunday's series finale to the Tampa Bay Rays, the New York Yankees provided some good news and optimism for the future.
Per ESPN's Jeff Passan, the Yankees are promoting their No. 1 prospect shortstop George Lombard Jr. to Double-A Somerset following his successful stint in High-A ball.
The 26th pick in the 2023 MLB draft, Lombard opened the 2025 campaign on an absolute tear. Per Passan, the 19-year-old hit .329/.496/.488 with one home run, 13 RBI and 11 stolen bases.

Yankees Call Up 6'7" Prospect 📈
While Lombard has a long way to go before making it to the majors, he's already shown that he has the makings of a future star.
"Not only does Lombard feature the potential for solid or better tools across the board, he has the high baseball IQ to make the most of them. He possesses a sound right-handed stroke, recognizes pitches well and uses the entire field, so he's equipped to hit for average," his scouting report on MLB.com stated. "... He has more bat speed and strength than most players his age, which already gives him plus raw power that he'll tap into more often as he learns to lift balls in the air more frequently."
Lombard is the son of former MLB outfielder and Detroit Tigers bench coach George Lombard. His younger brother, Jacob, is one of the top prospects in the 2026 high school class.
The Yankees fell to 19-15 with Sunday's loss to the Rays but remain in first place in the AL East. The team will open a three-game set against the San Diego Padres (22-11) on Monday.
