Shedeur Sanders' NFL Draft Slide Continues to Stun Fans As Steelers Pass Again

Adam WellsApr 26, 2025

Stop me if you've heard this in this past two days: Shedeur Sanders draft slide continued through the fourth round of the 2025 NFL draft.

The Colorado quarterback, once thought of as a potential first-round pick, went unpicked through the entire fourth round on Saturday.

While it was impossible to say any team was an obvious landing spot for Sanders anymore, the Pittsburgh Steelers with their need at quarterback once again passed on him. They used their first pick in the fourth round (No. 123 overall) to select Ohio State linebacker Jack Sawyer.

In response to the Steelers passing on Sanders, fans and analysts have started to speculate that it might just be in his best interest to go undrafted at this point.

Despite the continued slide, Sanders continues to be optimistic, saying that "good news is supposed to be coming soon" during his brother Shilo's Twitch live stream:

The Steelers were the closest thing to an obvious destination for Sanders in the fourth round. No other team picking at the start of the round was screaming for a quarterback.

With the exception of the New York Jets at No. 110, the first 20 picks in the round were from teams that are either set at quarterback or have already addressed the position in the draft.

Even the Jets gave Justin Fields a contract in free agency that suggests they are more than comfortable going through 2025 with him as their starter.

The Cleveland Browns finally ended Sanders' long wait in the fifth round when they traded up with the Seattle Seahawks to take him at No. 144 overall.

Pittsburgh is holding out hope that Aaron Rodgers will sign at some point in the near-future. Steelers owner Art Rooney said on Friday the indications they've gotten are that Rodgers wants to play there and a decision may come "soon."

Rodgers' decision, frankly, shouldn't hold this much sway on whether or not the Steelers take Sanders. Signing a quarterback who will turn 42 on Dec. 2 and hasn't played at a high level since 2021 is hardly a long-term solution for the franchise.

The Ringer's Todd McShay recently said that Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin "really likes" Sanders. How much Tomlin likes him appears to be a significant question since they have made three picks without taking him thus far.

Pittsburgh currently has three more selections remaining, with one in each of the final three rounds to potentially add a quarterback. One thing we know for sure now is that it won't be Sanders, who will attempt to make them pay now that he's joining the Steelers' AFC North rival.
