Rey Mysterio's Injury Reportedly Revealed After Being Replaced at WWE WrestleMania 41
A groin injury was the reason for Rey Mysterio's absence at WrestleMania 41, according to Wrestling Observer Radio's Dave Meltzer (via Steve Carrier of Ringside News).
Mysterio revealed on the pre-show he wasn't medically cleared to get into the ring Saturday night and said Rey Fénix would take his place against El Grande Americano.
The injury occurred on Friday night as Mysterio, Fénix and Dragon Lee combined to defeat Chad Gable and The Creed Brothers in a six-man tag team match on SmackDown. WWE trainers had to help him to the back, which didn't look to be part of the plan.
That set up a bit of a dilemma for WWE's creative team.
WrestleMania was supposed to pay off the extended feud between Mysterio and El Grande Americano/Chad Gable. Based on the outcome of Saturday's bout, the company still has some big plans for El Grande Americano ahead.
But that meant Fénix lost the first big match of his WWE run, and those are never ideal circumstances.
Still, simply getting a WrestleMania showcase was a huge sign of the internal confidence in the 34-year-old luchador considering he only debuted a few weeks ago.
Depending on the severity of Mysterio's injury, Fénix may also be getting elevated a bit more moving forward if the rivalry with El Grande Americano continues.
