Buy or Sell Latest WWE WrestleMania Match Rumors, Top Tag Team off the Card, More
While the WrestleMania 41 card is fully starting to take shape, the pro wrestling rumor mill hasn’t exactly slowed down.
There are, after all, those pesky matches yet to be announced and the idea that surprise returns could still happen.
Those things tend to headline the rumor mill right up until the opening match of the show on Night 1. That’s especially the case this year, especially now that certain segments between feuding Superstars seemed to go off the rails and AEW continues to make some noise on the mill, too.
Match card details, backstage rumblings about heat and the idea of returns dominate the list this week.
Here’s a look at the must-know rumblings and whether fans should buy or sell on each as legit.
Tiffany Stratton vs. Charlotte Flair Fallout
1 of 5
The Rumor
A recent Tiffany Stratton-Charlotte Flair promo went off the rails in a big way, to say the least. According to Randall Ortman of Cageside Seats), though, there were no resulting backstage issues after the fact between the two. That said, WWE officials weren’t too pleased, it seems, according to Bryan Alvarez on Wrestling Observer Live (h/t Jeff Whalen of Rajah.com).
Reaction
It was plain to see in real-time, even for casual viewers, that the segment became a disaster quickly, with things like failed marriages getting mentioned and Stratton’s voice being mocked, to name just a few things. Heat in the moment from WWE but the Superstars remaining professional after the fact isn’t shocking.
Buy or Sell?
Easy buy. WWE is going to try selling this as business as usual and everyone just blurring the lines to “work” fans. But it clearly isn’t, although everyone keeping things on track to preserve ‘Mania is a no-brainer of an outcome.
WWE Return Buzz
2 of 5
The Rumor
Fans speculating about a Saraya return to WWE might want to slow down. The former AEW Superstar told WrestleZone’s Bill Pritchard that she hasn’t talked to WWE. WrestleVotes (h/t Ortman) noted that there’s nothing “short-term” for Saraya right now with WWE.
Reaction
Saraya returning to WWE just feels like a matter of time, all things considered, between her history and the pro wrestling landscape, to name a few factors. As speculated by WrestleVotes, the women’s Evolution 2 show over the summer would make a lot of sense.
Buy or Sell?
Huge sell. There’s zero chance WWE hasn’t reached out since Saraya revealed she was leaving AEW. It’s just smart business and she’s surely got feelers out about it, too.
Match Card Updates
3 of 5
The Rumor
The ‘Mania match card continues to take shape. According to WrestleVotes (h/t Ortman), the plan is for “14 or 15 matches” across the two nights.
Reaction
The number would make sense. That lets the huge matches have plenty of time—and some audience rest matches in between those for good measure. Cody Rhodes vs. John Cena and the Triple Threat featuring CM Punk, Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins, to name a few, will need a lot of time.
Buy or Sell?
Buy. As of this writing, there are roughly 12 matches confirmed, though many don’t have a confirmed night yet. Tacking on a few more, plus leaving time for backstage segments and surprises, seems like standard ‘Mania operating procedure.
The Jon Moxley Plan?
4 of 5
The Rumor
AEW's Dynasty finished with a so-so received main event finish that featured Jon Moxley retaining over Swerve Strickland, with the presence of the Young Bucks not helping matters. According to Fightful’s Sean Ross Sapp (h/t Ortman), Moxley doesn’t have creative control and Tony Khan continues to keep his run alive due to non-public numbers that provide feedback.
Reaction
The last thing AEW fans seemingly wanted to see right now was more Moxley at the top, which is a stark shift from the company’s origins, to say the least. Khan and AEW now have to walk the tricky line between generating good heat for a story and simple fan indifference.
Buy or Sell?
Let’s briefly sell on Moxley having no creative control, but buy on Khan having final say and liking what he’s seeing with the numbers. The question now is whether those numbers lag and/or don’t properly take the temperature of fans.
Tag Team Champs to Miss Mania?
5 of 5
The Rumor
One match that apparently won’t make the cut for ‘Mania? The Street Profits defending their tag titles. According to WrestleVotes (h/t Ortman), they will instead need to defend them just before the event on the April 18 edition of SmackDown. In a different report, WrestleVotes added that New Day vs. War Raiders, though, could make the match card cut.
Reaction
If true, it’s a huge shame. WWE seems to take random stabs at making tag divisions matter, then will turn around and keep an actually established duo and their titles off the biggest event of the year? Just silly.
Buy or Sell?
An unfortunate buy. One could argue that the SmackDown episode will give the Street Profits more time to shine, rather than getting lost on the ‘Mania card. One would also be wrong.
