OVERALL
Bru McCoy has the physical ability to be an impactful outside wide receiver.
McCoy has a well-proportioned build suited to thrive as an outside/boundary receiver. He uses that strong frame to fight through contact from handsy cornerbacks during his routes. This strength can be seen on run-blocking reps on the perimeter. McCoy attacks corners with the right play temperament and power to seal/look them out for his RB.
He sells vertical stems well with a free release. McCoy presses up onto the corners’ toes with urgency pushing them further into their backpedal or coverage drops before breaking at the top of his routes. This opens up double-moves to generate more vertical/explosive plays. He deploys crips and sharp jab steps during his slant routes—arguably the best route he runs.
McCoy ran a limited route tree in the Vols’ gimmicky offense. He was not asked to run a heavy array of routes. Additionally, he struggles with rotational hip stiffness. McCoy does not come out of his breaks with sharp cuts and doesn’t turn fluidly. Instead of holding the line of his break, he drifts upfield, decreasing the chances of optimal separation. That resulted in lost yardage from his ineffective running route.
McCoy's sink and drive phases of his routes have extra steps, limiting how quickly he can get open at times. At his size/build, more consistency in winning physically contested-catch situations will raise his floor and ceiling in the NFL.
McCoy is a strong-framed, run-after-the-catch outside receiver. He has impact-starter-level talent, but his production is vastly lacking. He projects as a developmental boundary receiver to draft and stash behind quality starters. With the right coaching and improvements to his game, McCoy could eventually be inserted into a starting lineup.
