El Grande Americano Beats Rey Fenix at WWE WrestleMania 41 After Rey Mysterio Injury

Mike ChiariApr 19, 2025

El Grande Americano beat Rey Fenix on Night 1 of WrestleMania 41 on Saturday after an injury to Rey Mysterio denied the Hall of Famer the revenge he sought against the faux luchador.

Fenix was looking strong until El Grande slipped what appeared to be a piece of metal into the forehead area of his mask.

Fenix hurt his foot after kicking the plate, leaving El Grande to deliver an ankle lock and then a headbutt moments later for the win.

The journey toward El Grande Americano's debut began in January when Chad Gable lost a match to a debuting Penta on the second episode of Raw on Netflix.

After the loss, Gable said he would be stepping away temporarily in order to get some answers and guidance regarding how to beat luchadores.

A vignette aired showing Gable receiving a box from a mysterious man. The contents of the box were never shown, but once El Grande Americano debuted last month, it was safe to assume the Olympian had acquired a mask.

Gable was supposed to face Dragon Lee in a singles match on the March 24 episode of Raw, but he told general manager Adam Pearce he was sick and produced a doctor's note.

In his place, Gable suggested El Grande Americano face Lee. Despite everyone being privy to Gable's game, the match was made official, and El Grande Americano was victorious.

Gable's antics infuriated the LWO due to their belief that he was making a mockery of lucha libre. That led to a six-man tag team match on the April 7 edition of Raw, pitting El Grande Americano and the Creed Brothers against Lee, Joaquin Wilde and Cruz Del Toro.

The heel team won due to El Grande Americano loading his mask with a foreign object and using it to hit Lee with a diving headbutt.

Due to his desire to teach El Grande a lesson in respect, Mysterio asked for a singles match against him at WrestleMania 41, and Pearce was quick to oblige.

As arguably the greatest luchador of all time, The Master of the 619 said during the preshow for WrestleMania 41 that he had not been medically cleared to fight.

His replacement, Fenix, joined WWE just weeks ago and was ultimately no match for El Grande Americano.
