Tyus Jones, Magic Reportedly Agree to $7M Contract, Updated Salary Cap for 2025 NBA FA
After a one-year stint with the Phoenix Suns, Tyus Jones is reportedly moving on.
Per ESPN's Shams Charania, Jones agreed to a one-year, $7 million deal with the Orlando Magic on Monday.
ESPN's Bobby Marks provided an update on the salary cap situation:
Jones, a 10-year veteran, spent the first four seasons of his career with the Minnesota Timberwolves before playing for the Memphis Grizzlies from 2019 to 2023.
After a one-year stint with the Washington Wizards in 2023-24, Jones inked a one-year deal with the Suns last offseason, filling a major need for a true point guard on Phoenix's roster.
Jones has spent most of his career coming off the bench, but earned a starting role in Washington and kept that role in Phoenix. In turn, he's put up some of the best numbers of his career over the last two years.
After averaging 12 points and 7.3 assists per game with the Washington Wizards, Jones took on a lesser role in Phoenix last season but still put up 10.2 points and 5.3 assists.
Despite Jones playing his role well, the 2024-25 season was one to forget for Phoenix. The Suns finished the year 36-46 and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2020.
Now Jones will join his fourth team in as many years, where he'll look to make an instant impact for the Magic.
With Jalen Suggs returning from an injury that limited him to just 35 games, Jones will likely jump in as the team's backup point guard, though there's a chance he and Anthony Black will compete to be the first player off the bench. Regardless, Jones should get plenty of minutes in Orlando, even if it doesn't come in a starting role.
Orlando is a team on the rise after back-to-back playoff appearances. With a rising star in Paolo Banchero and the newly acquired Desmond Bane, the Magic are hoping to get over the hump this year and win their first playoff series since 2010.
Adding Jones to the mix makes that goal much easier.
