Video: Duke's Jon Scheyer Gets Emotional Reflecting on Tyrese Proctor's CBB Journey

Andrew PetersMar 23, 2025

Jon Scheyer got emotional talking about his veteran point guard after Duke's Round of 32 win over Baylor on Sunday.

The Blue Devils head coach praised Tyrese Proctor not only for his performance in the win, but for his journey through college basketball so far.

"For this to happen for Tyrese, to be hitting seven threes and to be our key guy and all that after going through all these moments," Scheyer said. "If I'm an NBA team, I'm going after him because you have to handle adversity, and I think that speaks a lot to his character."

Proctor came to Duke ahead of Scheyer's first season as head coach in 2022-23 and had a solid freshman year, putting up 9.4 points, 3.3 assists and 3.1 rebounds per game. As Scheyer mentioned, he got some interest from NBA teams but ultimately decided to stick around for at least another year.

He didn't make much of a leap in Year 2 but has had a phenomenal junior year. He's averaging 12.2 points on 43.8 percent shooting from the field and 39.7 percent from deep and is the Blue Devils' third-leading scorer only behind freshman standouts Cooper Flagg and Kon Knueppel.

Proctor's scoring abilities were on full display Sunday as he dropped 25 points on 9-of-10 shooting from the field (7-of-8 from three), leading Duke past Baylor. That performance followed a 19-point outing in the first round against Mount St. Mary's.

Proctor might not be the Blue Devil making headlines this year as Flagg gets most of the attention, but his importance to the team is evident based on how Scheyer talks about him.

Whether Proctor will stay for another year at Duke or head to the NBA remains to be seen, but for now he has his eyes set on another goal.

The Blue Devils will face the winner of No. 4 Arizona and No. 5 Oregon in the Sweet 16 next Thursday. A win would send Duke to the Elite Eight for a second consecutive season as it looks to win its first championship since 2015.
