Spurs' Sandro Mamukelashvili Sets NBA Record With 34 Points in 19 Minutes vs. Knicks
San Antonio Spurs forward Sandro Mamukelashvili carved out a unique place in NBA history in Wednesday's 120-105 win over the New York Knicks.
The fourth-year big came off the bench to score 34 points in 19 minutes on the floor. ESPN's Michael C. Wright noted those were the most points scored in fewer than 20 minutes since the NBA started officially tracking minutes played in 1951-52.
From local rec leagues up through the highest levels of the sport, every basketball player dreams of having one game where they simply can't miss. And that was pretty much Mamukelashvili. He shot 13-of-14 from the floor and was perfect with his seven three-point attempts.
"I've been waiting for this day for a long time," he said, per Wright. "I just can't explain how I feel right now. I feel like I'm in a dream. I manifested and prayed for it. I just waited for this day. I really had an out of body experience for a little bit there. I was like, 'Is this really happening?'"
Maybe rapper Flavor Flav was Mamukelashvili's good luck charm. They've built up a friendship over the years, and Wednesday was the first time Flavor Flav made the trip to San Antonio for a game.
This has been a tough campaign for the Spurs.
Legendary head coach Gregg Popovich took a leave of absence for health reasons, and star Victor Wembanyama was sidelined for the rest of the year in February because of deep vein thrombosis in his shoulder. The franchise's playoff drought is likely to extend to six seasons.
For one night at least, none of that mattered as Mamukelashvili went supernova and brought the Frost Bank Center crowd to its feet.
